If you’ve been told you have flat feet, you’re not alone. Also known as fallen arches, flat feet occur when the arches of your feet collapse or fail to develop properly, causing the entire sole to touch the ground. While some people experience little to no discomfort, others struggle with foot fatigue, aching legs, or even back pain. At Body-Mind-Spirit Podiatric Center in Ashland, KY, we believe in a well-rounded approach to care. One that empowers you with tools to improve your body, naturally.
Why Strengthening Exercises Matter
Flat feet can lead to overpronation, where the foot rolls inward excessively with each step. Over time, this can stress the ankles, knees, hips, and even the lower back. Strengthening the muscles that support your arches and ankles can help promote better alignment, reduce pain, and improve your overall stability.
Try These Exercises at Home
These gentle, targeted exercises can be done daily to help support your arches and encourage stronger foot function:
1. Towel Scrunches: Place a towel flat on the floor and use your toes to scrunch it toward you. This helps activate the small muscles in the bottom of your feet that support the arch.
2. Toe Curls with Marbles: Scatter a few marbles on the floor and try to pick them up with your toes and drop them into a bowl. It’s a fun, simple way to engage your foot muscles.
3. Arch Lifts: While standing, focus on lifting the arch of your foot while keeping your toes and heel grounded. This is a subtle movement but very effective at activating the intrinsic foot muscles.
4. Heel Raises: Stand behind a chair for support and slowly rise onto the balls of your feet, then lower back down. This exercise strengthens your calves and improves ankle stability.
5. Toe Yoga: Try lifting your big toe while keeping your other toes on the ground, and then reverse, lifting your four smaller toes while keeping the big toe down. This increases toe coordination and foot awareness.
